The most important lessons about digital literacy include Copyright, Fair use, and Personal safety.
Copyright is the ownership of an item to someone. When someone creates something of their own, they immediately become the copyright owner. Maybe someone decided to copy CD’s and give them to their friends. They can’t do that because when you buy CD’s at the store, the money goes towards the artist, but copying them is different from buying them. You can really only make copied CD’s if it follows the guidelines of fair use.
Fair use makes an exception to taking copyrighted things. If someone took a music video from the internet, and reposted it on their own as a parody (putting new words in a song) that’s okay because they changed the video and made it their own.
Exceptions of fair use include…
- Commercial uses or Educational non profit purposes
- using small parts of videos, not the whole thing - or parodies
Personal safety is about protecting yourself on the internet.
If a someone has a public social media account, and its public, anyone can see it and take their pictures. Turning on privacy settings stops people from being able to access your account, steal your identity, or take personal pictures or information.

Your blog had a lot of information. I agree that you can’t just use whatever photo, video, etc you want. I think its is unique you included a video.I also liked your example of the cd’s. What are some of the other fairuse rules??
ReplyDeleteI agree with the part where you wrote about keeping your identity/personal information safe. Especially the part where you talked about that anyone could take your pictures from social media if you don’t protect your account. This post made me think about how fair use helps lots of people protect their work.
ReplyDeleteI agree that you should always follow the rules of fair use because if you take someone else’s work and pass it off as your own, you could get into a lot of trouble. I also agree that you should be careful of your privacy settings because if you post something online, and the settings are set so that anyone at all can see your information, complete strangers could find out your name, address and such. I liked reading your blog.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your post because, when you described and gave examples of Copyright, Fair use, and Personal Safety it showed me how important those three factors are. I can relate to this blog post because I, too, believe that being safe and private online is very important. Lastly, I really enjoyed the video you chose for your blog because the video showed how crucial being a digital citizen is.
